Dear Members,
We are writing to address a serious and ongoing issue that is deeply concerning and must stop immediately – the verbal abuse directed a tour Instructional Referees (IRs).
It has been brought to our attention that adult coaches, managers, and spectators are confronting and abusing IRs during matches, particularly when they feel that not enough is being done to control aggressive play. Let us be absolutely clear, this behaviour is unacceptable.
Instructional Referees are typically young individuals, many still children, who are learning the role and developing their confidence in officiating. The abuse they are receiving not only undermines their development but also damages their wellbeing and enjoyment of the game. These referees are doing their best and are under the guidance of experienced mentors.
Although you may not personally feel that your tone or approach is abusive, it’s important to stop and reflect: you are an adult, and they are a child. Your role is not to approach the IR directly under any circumstance. Even a stern or demanding tone from an adult can be intimidating or distressing to a young referee, and this kind of behaviour is not acceptable in our game.
Every club has a designated official or duty officer present at matches. If there are concerns about refereeing decisions or game management, they must be raised with the club official or duty officer, not with the IR directly. This person will assess and take appropriate action if required.
We urge every member of our football community, parents, coaches, managers, and supporters to remember why we are all here: to foster a positive and supportive environment for young players and officials alike. Respect, patience and perspective are essential.
We thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Let’s work together to protect and nurture the next generation of referees.
Kind regards,
Hills Football
