The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup is set to begin this Friday across Canada, Mexico and the United States of America, with the Socceroos preparing to compete in their 6th consecutive World Cup. With live and free TV coverage plus countless live sites around Sydney, the largest World Cup ever is set to engulf the world and ignite the footballing community.
The Socceroos, led by head coach and former player Tony Popovic, are entering the World Cup in a unique position as their World Cup group is arguably their most even and competitive World Cup group in recent finals, and with a mix of youth and experience, the green and gold are eyeing back-to-back appearances in the knockout stages for the first time.
Familiar faces such as Mathew Ryan, Mathew Leckie and Jackson Irvine will return to the world stage accompanied by the next generation of Socceroos stars, including Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Touré and Lucas Herrington.

With a record number of 48 nations spread across 12 groups, the Socceroos are set to take on Türkiye, who will appear in their first World Cup for the first time in 24 years. Co-host the USA, who will be backed by a nation with high expectations, and South American nation Paraguay, who had an impressive qualifying campaign, knocking off Brazil and current world champions Argentina.
Elsewhere, Argentina, led by eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, will be hoping to defend their world title from four years ago and become the first back-to-back winners in over 64 years. Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing for his sixth and final World Cup campaign with Portugal, with the Portuguese one of the nations that can put a genuine charge towards World Cup glory. Other nations that could make a deep run in this year’s tournament are England, France, Germany, Spain and Brazil, who are hoping to replicate tournaments of years gone by.
Closer to home, there are several ways fans who aren’t making the trip to North America can get involved and support the boys in green and gold. SBS is the dedicated home to the global tournament this winter, with all 104 games of the World Cup streaming live and exclusive on SBS and SBS on demand.

Moreover, there are countless live sites popping up across Sydney, allowing fans to come together and celebrate. Allianz Stadium will be opening its doors for this Sunday’s Türkiye game, with the game being put up on their big screen. Tumbalong Park, the site of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup fan site in Darling Harbour, will be activated again for this World Cup, and there will be a live site at Parramatta Square and Cathy Freeman Park at Sydney Olympic Park.
Running from Friday, the 12th of June to Monday, the 20th of July, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to break records and expectations for what a World Cup is and with the Socceroos quietly confident heading into the tournament, there is no reason for football fans not to support the Socceroos and embrace the beautiful game.
