Hills Football Referees Celebrates Record Breaking 2025 Season

Season 2025 stands as our best year on record for our Referee Program, marking the third consecutive year of growth across every area of the refereeing space. From recruitment and retention to development, performance, and elite pathway achievements, the progress made this year showcases the strength, professionalism, and potential of our referee community.

Strongest Participation Numbers Ever Recorded

Referee participation has continued its upward trajectory, culminating in our largest active group to date. This season we achieved:

  • 399 registered referees
  • 11 entrance courses delivered, with an outstanding 99.3% conversion rate from course completion to full registration
  • 97.03% referee coverage, with 4,396 matches covered out of 4,521 played, representing a 2.61% increase from last year
  • A 30.77% increase in female referees, rising from 39 in 2024 to 51 in 2025
  • 34 qualified referee coaches completing 289 coaching reports, providing structured support and feedback across all levels

These results reflect not only the dedication of our match officials, but also the significant work behind the scenes by our education and development teams.

Continued Growth in Diversity and Pathways

One of the standout achievements of 2025 was the significant increase in female referees. A 30.77% rise in female participation demonstrates the success of our targeted initiatives and the welcoming environment being fostered within our ranks.

Our development pathways also continued to strengthen, with more young referees entering structured coaching programs and receiving regular assessments to support their progression.

Excellence on the National and State Stage

This season also delivered outstanding success stories at the State and National levels, with several of our referees earning prestigious appointments and pathway opportunities:

  • Jake Rose – NPL NSW Men’s Grand Final Referee (the highest appointment in the state), Australia Cup Round of 32 Referee, Australian Championship Referee, and A-League Men’s Fourth Official
  • Alana Zic – Emerging Socceroos Championships Match Official
  • Hayden Burns – Selected for the FA National Referee Academy
  • Alexandar Zastavnikovic – Selected for the FNSW Referee Academy and appointed to the FNSW BYL1 U18 Grand Final (the highest appointment for Academy referees)
  • Valentina Malagon Avila – Selected for the FNSW Referee Academy

These accomplishments highlight the depth of talent within our referee group and the strength of our development systems.
